Kristen J. Maye

Kristen J. Maye is a doctoral candidate in the Africana Studies department at Brown University. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a BA in Afro-American Studies and History. Her dissertation research examines black studies as an intellectual, theoretical, and political project, and how its advent intervenes on the idea of the university and the production of hegemonic knowledge. Her work poses questions about the operations of anti-blackness within progressive social institutions like the university, and what those operations mean for conceiving and enacting black liberatory projects. Kristen spent the time between her undergraduate studies and her doctoral program working in criminal justice and drug policy reform in New York City.
